Akron Alumni

The first chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi in the Akron area was Gamm Tau Chapter which received its charter May 15, 1949. This chapter was formed with undergraduate students from Kent State University and the University of Akron. The sponsors were: Dr. E.T Sharp, Dr. Melvin Farris, W. Howard Fort, Esq., Paul Meade and Eugene Robinson. The charter members of Gamma Tau were:

Upon graduation, many of these Kappa men sought a chapter in which to fellowship and continue the work of the Fraternity. This need was filled with the chartering of Akron Alumni on March 27, 1955. From its inception, Akron Alumni has been very active in the Akron Metropolitan community.

Akron Alumni prides itself on the many individual accomplishments of its members:

  • W. Howard Fort, Esq. Elected to First National Bank Board of Directors.
  • Reverend Ronald J. Fowler elected Chairman of the Akron Public School Board
  • Harold K. Stubbs elected Deputy Mayor
  • George C. Miller named Akron Publis Schools' first African -American principal
  • Walter Blount elected East Central Province Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
  • Gene Scruggs, Don Clark, Rev. Ronald Fowler and Fred Gissandaner elected to Summit County Athletic Hall of Fame.
