| Kappa’s Named Pioneers in Education, Sports and Medicine in the Akron Community |

Brother Scruggs is a native of Akron and was awarded a Pioneer in Education and Sports Award. He worked in the Akron Public Schools as a teacher, administrator, and mentor for over 50 years. Gene was inducted in the Akron Softball Hall of Fame, Ohio High School Athletic Association Hall Of Fame for Basketball Officials, awarded the Bill Falor Service Award by the Akron Dapper Dan Club of Akron, and in 2019, inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame as a Basketball Official. Gene was the first man of color to officiate a Ohio High School State Final Basketball Tournament in 1968 in Columbus. Brother Scruggs is a charter member of Akron Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. Brother Dr. Platt was awarded a Pioneer in Medicine Award. He graduated from South Carolina State in Orangeburg with a Bachelor of Science degree. He served in the U. S. Air Force were he attended the Air Force School of Aviation Medicine. Dr. Platt served as the second African American to serve a internship at Akron City Hospital. He continued at City Hospital as a resident physician in Internal Medicine and was the first African American to complete his residency training at that institution. In 1964, Dr. Platt entered private practice of Internal Medicine and remains in private practice, at Continuous Care Associates, to this day. Brother Platt has served in a number of positions at Akron City Hospital, including serving on the Medical Executive Committee and senior staff. |
Akron Urban League at their 2010 Annual Meeting and Scholarship Luncheon choose Akron Alumni members of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc. members Gene P. Scruggs,49 Gamma Tau and Dr. Russell Platt, Sr., Alpha Lambda, as Pioneers in the City of Akron, and their Protégés gave a video presentation outlining the Brothers unique contributions to the protégé’s success.
